5 Critical Fall Items to Clean Your Home

With the leaves falling and summer far behind, it’s time to turn your attention to getting your home ready for the coming winter. In addition to small repairs and some routine DIY home maintenance, you should give your home a good deep clean this fall.

Plan to move from room to room with a list of tasks. When you are drawing up your to-do list make sure that you’ve got these five critical items on hand to really clean your home easily and effectively.

preparing your home for the fall

1 - A Rake for the Leaves

New Hampshire is beautiful in the fall because of all of the colors of the changing leaves. However, as these leaves fall from the trees and winter approaches, they need to be raked up and disposed of.

rakingIt’s ok to leave a light layer of leaves over the top of your lawn for some insulation when the snow falls. However, if you’ve got multiple layers over your lawn, it will damage the grass while it is dormant during the winter.

A rake can be handy to clean out gutters from debris as well as window wells.

2 - Versatile Microfiber Cloths

This may seem low-tech, but microfiber cloths are some of the most effective cleaning tools you can have. They are versatile. They are environmentally friendly because they can be washed and reused. This also makes them less expensive in the long run as well.

Use these cloths to dust in all the nooks and crannies that you don’t usually- like the corners of the rooms and the blinds. Also give your windows a good clean, inside and out.

3 - Many Uses for a Lint Roller

A lint roller is great for picking up fine particles from your furniture and clothing, but it also has other very helpful uses when you are cleaning. You can use your lint rollmicrofiber-clothser to clean lampshades, the insides of drawers, dust your drapes and clean off your children’s stuffed animals.

4 - Vinegar is not just for cooking.

Nature’s super cleaner is likely right there in your home, ready to unleash its cleaning power. You can easily use vinegar everywhere in your home. Dilute it with equal parts water in a spray bottle and clean whatever surface you like.

You can also use vinegar (together with baking soda) to clean out your kitchen pipes. Let this mixture foam and then flush with hot water.

5 - Vacuum Cleaner

It’s time to give those carpets a really thorough clean. Treat stains and vacuum vigorously. Also vacuum your furniture and draperies. Vacuum around smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Dust can accumulate and make them less effective.
